Christmas 2000

Para celebrar el cambio de siglo hice imprimir esta espectacular tarjeta panorámica de casi 50 cms. de ancho, representando a Bardín en un duro viaje iniciático a través de la última noche del siglo XX. 

To celebrate the turn of the century I printed this spectacular panoramic card, almost 50 cm. wide, representing Bardín going through a tough rite of passage during the last night of the 20th century.

Christmas 2001

Aquí me divertí de lo lindo, diseñando primero un sello bardiniano, e imitando después el diseño de una hoja completa de sellos de correos.

Al final decidí maquetarlo en un formato A5, y lo imprimí en casa, y así quedó la felicitación definitiva.

I had lots of fun doing my new year's card for 2001. I first designed a Bardín post stamp, then imitated a whole printed plate, and then adapted a piece of it to make the definitive card, with my home printer.

Otro christmas

Ya he puesto aquí mis christmas desde el 2002 hasta el 2012, y de momento me paro porque los anteriores no los tengo a mano, y la gran mayoría ni siquiera están digitalizados. Ya irán viniendo despacito, pero mientras tanto me acabo de encontrar con uno que hice de encargo en 2009 para el Govern de les Illes Balears, y aquí os lo dejo.

I've already shown here my christmas cards from 2002 up to 2012, and I have to stop for the moment because the former ones are not at hand now and most of them are not even digitalized. They will slowly come to the blog, but in the meantime I've just come across this one, which I made as a command from the Government of the Balearic Islands.

Christmas 2003

Ese año me uní a mis amigos de la banda NeoTokyo y de la productora visual La Periférica para idear una felicitación conjunta. El resultado: un CD interactivo, con su funda y todo, conteniendo música y pequeñas animaciones basadas en el personaje de la cubierta, Mr. Okada, y una tarjeta interior, que recibieron agradecidos nuestros clientes y amigos. He aquí la portada, la contra y el tarjetón.

That year I joined my friends from the band NeoTokyo and the video-producers La Periférica to create a common new year's card. The result was an interactive CD containing music and small animations based on the character on the cover, Mr. Okada. Here's the cover, back cover and inner card.

Christmas 2004

Antes de convertirse en una página del álbum de Bardín, estas viñetas, en forma de tarjeta en impresión digital fueron mi felicitación para 2004. Por cierto, acabo de convocar un concurso sobre el misterioso gag del Christmas 2010 que puse ayer aquí. Bueno, más que un gag es casi un enigma: ¿por qué están los dos ceros enfadados con el uno? Quien primero lo resuelva recibirá un ejemplar del libro "Max, sketchbook" (Ed. Sins entido, 2005) o uno del "Peter Pank" integral (La Cúpula, 2011), a escoger. 

Before becoming one page of the Bardín book, these story, as a digitally printed card, was my new year's card for 2004. By the way, I just started a contest on the misterious gag in the 2010 Christmas card. Well, it really is an enigma more than a gag: why are the two zeros mad at the one? The one who first solves it will receive either "Max, sketchbook" (Ed. Sins entido, 2005) or the recent "Peter Pank" compilation (La Cúpula, 2011), up to his/her choice. 

Christmas 2005

Bardín como enramado, se ve que preveía un 2005 desasosegante. Habrá quien piense que me paso de tristón en mis felicitaciones, pero qué le voy a hacer si los finales de año me ponen melancólico. Esta solo se imprimió en papel, que yo recuerde.

Bardín as a tree branch, looks like I was anticipating an unsettling 2005. Some will say that most of my new year's cards are way too gloomy, but what can I do if every ending of the year puts me into a melancholic mood. This one had only a homemade printed version, as far as I can remember.

Christmas 2006

Otra felicitación enigmática hecha a partir de un boceto sin propósito que me gustaba especialmente. De hecho, me gusta tanto aún que ambas figuras se han convertido en personajes de "Vapor", mi próximo libro. Igual que la de 2007, esta tuvo versión impresa casera y también digital.

"Homecoming of the swineherd", another cryptic new year's card from one of my random sketchbook drawings which I specially liked. As a matter of fact I still like it so much that the two figures have become characters in "Vapor", my next book. As the 2007 card, this one too had a homemade printed version and a digital one.

Para la felicitación de 2007 usé un boceto de mi cuaderno de trabajo sin apenas retocarlo (no me preguntéis qué significa el dibujo, no tengo ni idea). Esta fue la última de mis felicitaciones que tuvo versión impresa en papel -una pequeña tirada en mi impresora casera- para enviar por correo postal, aunque también circuló digitalmente a través de El Pez Dactilar.

I used one of the drawings in my sketchbook to do the 2007 new year's card (don't ask me about the meaning of it, I just don't have a clue). This was my last yearly card to have a small homemade printrun on paper, though I also spread it through my digital newsletter El Pez Dactilar.

Bardín, viajero perdido en el último día del 2007: el año siguiente no aparecía por ninguna parte.

Bardín y su sombra  en un paisaje de extrarradio protagonizaron la felicitación digital para 2009.

Bardín and his shadow on a suburbial landscape were guests at the new year's digital card for 2009.

Esta fue mi felicitación digital para 2010. Es una de mis favoritas de entre todas, por dibujo y color, pero sobre todo por el gag, tan sutil que casi nadie lo pilla.

My 2010 New year's card. One of my favourites, because of the drawing and the color, but also because of the gag in it, so subtle that almost nobody gets it.

Christmas 2011

Mi felicitación digital del año pasado. Esta vez pasé de alegorías más o menos herméticas sobre el cambio de año y simplemente me desahogué contra la inclemente ley anti-tabaco que entraba en vigor el día 1 de enero.

My 2011 digital New year's card. This time it was not an allegory, but a personal vindication against the merciless anti-smoking law that was starting on january 1st.

Sillón de orejas #208

El dibujo de hoy en Babelia. Estaba claro que tocaba referirse a la llegada del nuevo año. No sabía muy bien qué hacer y apenas disponía de tiempo, y entonces me acordé de mi felicitación para 2002. Pensé que, dado que tres de las cifras del año coincidían, quizá podría partir de ella para hacer algo distinto. Y así ha salido, con leves cambios en la arquitectura, sustitución de algunos personajes, añadido de un cadáver casi fuera de campo, y color y clima inspirados en el texto de Manuel Rodríguez Rivero.

Today's illustration in Babelia. I wanted to do something about the upcoming year, but I had less time than usual to do it, so I thought I could start from my 2002 New year's card and see if I could come up with something different enough.

Christmas 2002

Desde que empecé a publicar dibujos, allá por 1973, adopté la tradición de hacer cada fin de año una tarjeta de felicitación del año nuevo -que no de la Navidad-. Las tres o cuatro primeras fueron impresas en fotocopia sobre cartulina, y destinadas a la venta en paradas de amigos del Mercat de Santa Llúcia, el mercado de navidad junto a la catedral de Barcelona. Pero pronto pasé a imprimirlas en offset, y ya solo para enviarlas como regalo a amigos y clientes. A lo largo de los años he ido cambiando técnicas de impresión y formatos, hasta que en los últimos tiempos he dejado de imprimir y ya solo existen como imagen digital. Voy a ir poniendo aquí la colección completa, y empiezo precisamente por la de 2002, porque tiene mucho que ver con la próxima entrada del blog.

Para felicitar el 2002 hice una pequeña tirada en offset de este hermético dibujo, con claras reminiscencias a Giorgio De Chirico. No todo el mundo advirtió que los personajes forman visualmente el número 2002. No recuerdo muy bien ahora cuáles fueron mis intenciones en aquel momento, pero está claro que hay algo cenizo, triste y violento a la vez, en la imagen y en sus colores. El primer 2 está claramente atascado contra la pared negra en su avance, los dos ceros están como enloquecidos, y el 2 recién llegado parece una anciana Parca, así que mi estado de ánimo ante el año que se avecinaba no debía ser el mejor. Sí recuerdo, sin embargo, que con los dos personajes del medio quise representar algo así como una patética persecución sexual. Pero ahora, justo mientras escribo esto, acabo de darme cuenta que dibujé esto en diciembre de 2001, solo unos meses después del atentado del 11 de septiembre, y que esos personajes no dejan de ser dos gemelos que echan humo...

Since I started publishing, back in 1973, I started the tradition of drawing and printing a New Year's card every year to send as a gift to friends and clients. Along the years I've been using different printing techniques and formats, until the last years when they've become just digital files. I'll show all of them here and I'm starting with the 2002 card because it has a lot to do with the next post in the blog.

For 2002 I did this hermetic drawing which owes a lot to Giorgio de Chirico's paintings. Not everyone saw that the characters visually form the number 2002. I can't remember well now which were my intentions at the moment, but it's clear that there's something sad and violent in the image and its colors. The first 2 is stuck against the black wall, unable to advance, the two zeros are going nuts and the new coming 2 looks like an old Death lady, so I'd say my state of mind in those days wasn't the best. Nevertheless I do remember that my intention with the two zero characters was to show some kind of pathetic sexual chase. But now, just as I am writing this, I realize that I did this drawing in december 2011, only a few months after September 11th, and that those characters are two twins on smoke...
